The Tree and Food Garden Initiative programs have been developed to address concerns about food security. In it's second year of operation the Tree Planting initiative had 16 approved applicants, with a total 47 trees planted this year and 89 total. In the future there will be a map of all the fruit trees that have been planted in town to aid the community in making decisions regarding pollination and what to plant where. From cherries and apples to hazelnuts; the valley promises an exciting bounty. The Skagway Food Initiative (in its first year) had 24 applicants; a third of the applicants rated themselves as beginners and 9 new gardens were constructed, including the restoration of an historic garden in Dyea. 10 gardeners grew food on land they did not own and 1 of them did so in the community garden. The total approved garden square footage was over 5000sq ft.
