Skagway's Position:

Skagway supports improved ferry service and opposes the road to Juneau. Our position on this transportation issue has been consistent and is evidenced by the following community actions:

 

· 1997 Council vote to comment on the EIS in support of Marine Highway and oppose road construction in Lynn Canal· ad in paper with 138 names of Skagway residents opposing construction of the road

· 1998, 99, 2000, City Council hired lobbyist to support funding for fast ferries in Lynn Canal.

· 2000 Mayor Mielke requests telephone poll to city hall on road issue Results: Against 130, For 24

· Skagway Comprehensive Plan shows majority of people supporting Marine Highway alternative

· Public Comment at DOT scoping meeting in Skagway – overwhelming majority of public comment opposes the road, only 5 comments total in support.

· 2003 Hearing in City Hall on issue, only 2 speak in support of road.

· 2003 Council passes resolution against road and for ferry service

· 2004 Public vote in which 62% of the voters supported improved ferry service in Lynn Canal over a road to Juneau
