The Skagway Environmental Action League is committed to promoting public awareness of the many environmental issues which affect the health of our environment and our community.
In the next month, Alaska's Legislature will decide the future of the wilderness north of Juneau and the use of state and federal money for years to come. In February Governor Sean Parnell announced the state budget included a $35 million earmark to extend Juneau's road system north through Berners Bay to the Kensington Mine.

Interested in the effects of the Fukushima Disaster on SE Alaska?
The seawater sampling kit from the Center for Marine and Environmental Radioactivity has arrived! A 5 gallon sample will be collected at Nahku Bay at 8:00am on Monday, April 7th, and mailed-off that afternoon. Shelby Surdyk will be collecting the sample, but would like to extend an open invitation to anyone else who would like to join or help. Skagway will be the most northern sample tested by CMER yet! A huge thanks to SMAC, the MOS, and all donors who helped fund the sample. Results will be reported at this site: www.ourradioactiveocean.org/results.html

Volunteers needed for Clean Sweep!
The proposed Juneau Road would consist of 51 miles of new road from Echo Cove (approximately 40 miles north of Juneau) to the Katzehin River via the east side of Lynn Canal, and a new ferry terminal at the river 90 miles from Juneau. This link takes you to the Alaska Marine Highway System's website for the Alaska Class Ferry. There you will find the preliminary design study report for the new Day Boat Alaska Class Ferry, which will be deployed in Lynn Canal. These new ferries will allow greater fuel and crew efficiencies.
